Dear Father,
At Jesus’ baptism by John, He heard Your voice identifying Him as Your beloved Son. He was then taken into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. In that temptation, we learned much about the Deceiver. He makes promises he never intends to keep based on half-truths. We are tempted to give in to selfishness, to put our personal needs first. Satan offers us fame, power, and popularity if we but, “bow down and worship him” The desire for power is intoxicating. Being influential, dominating others, rather than serving them, are all temptations we battle.

Jesus gives us the formula for pushing back on the schemes of the Evil One. He reminds us God provides. “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
When it comes to trusting in God Jesus says, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

And finally, given the choice of thinking Satan will offer us more than God if we give into him, Jesus says, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”

The Apostle Paul reminds us that we will never be tempted beyond what we can bear and God will provide a way out. So, we are never alone.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13.

Thank you, dear Savior, for not only showing us the way but also giving us a pathway forward through Your death and resurrection. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
